Fifteen years ago I was introduced to ceramics. I imediately became obsessed with it and spent many, many months working with the medium seeing how far I could push it. I found experimenting was really where I excelled. I can throw clay just fine. Most of the vessels I throw I call "sterile" vessels. In other words they are just forms I use to experiment with glazes on. About a decade ago I was rakauing and saw a small bump on a piece of pottery I liked. The bump couldn't have been any bigger then a quarter inch round. I took the time to analyze and understand exactly what had happend and why there was this anomaly. It took time and experimentation, but I finally had a breakthrough. I will never forget when I pulled the pot out of the rakau reduction chamber to see it for the first time. It was amazing. It looked like rivers of fire and lava. I entitled the glaze "Lava Rust" and have been playing with it ever since. It is incredibly versitile but can be extremely tempermental. It sure is worth it though. I never get tired looking at the various results. Thoes blisters? They are rock hard, not fragile at all. What a blast!
